Machiyas are the traditional townhouses of Kyoto's merchants, some dating back 300 years and served as both the home and workplace for their occupants. Unfortunately, over the years, many have been destroyed to make room for development. Recently, however, there has been strong interest to preserve the Machiya's architectural heritage and restore an important symbol of Kyoto's past. Our Machiyas are such a case.
Both Machiyas are located on a small cobblestone alley suitable only for pedestrians, so it's very quiet both day and night.
Unlike a hotel room or Ryokan where guests only have use of the room, you have the entire house and don't have to share with other guests. It is like your "home away from home" in Kyoto.
Please enjoy Kyoto's old world charm in the modern comforts of our traditional Machiya townhouses.
